What is alcohol dependence?
Alcohol dependence is a chronic brain disease, not a matter of “weak will.” It is characterized by a loss of control over drinking and a strong compulsion to consume alcohol.
The condition can lead to serious health, psychological, and social consequences.
Symptoms of alcohol dependence may include:
- difficulty limiting the amount of alcohol consumed,
- drinking despite negative consequences,
- withdrawal symptoms after stopping alcohol use,
- health, family, or work-related problems.
